Dan is the developer of D-RATS, a program for data communications with D-STAR radios. This free and open-source cross-platform application is used around the world by D-STAR and Emergency Communications enthusiasts. Dan also develops a piece of open source software for programming radios called CHIRP. He has been active in training local hams on the use of D-STAR and D-RATS for emergency communications.
He holds an Extra class license, is an ARRL member and the recipient of the 2009 ARRL Technical Achievement award for improving D-STAR emergency communications capabilities through his work on the D-RATS application.
He presented at the 2009 Dayton Hamvention D-STAR forum and has been invited to do so again in 2010. He also gave a D-RATS presentation at the 2009 MicroHams convention in Seattle and the 2009 TAPR DCC conference. He was recently published in Linux Journal with an article about ham radio for Linux users, and has previously been published in the ARRL QST magazine.
Dan has been involved with training local hams for the last few years in the areas of D-STAR and data transport technologies for emergency communications. He has served as the Oregon receive station for the Region 7 NTS net, and holds an ARRL Official Relay Station appointment.
Dan owns and operates what was the first gateway-linked D-STAR repeater to come online in northwest Oregon (KD7REX), and continues to support the Washington County D-STAR repeater (KD7RFI), located atop the Synopsys building in Hillsboro. He is actively involved in maintaining the Hillsboro EOC radio station.
