Gordon was first licensed as an amateur radio operator in the mid 80’s (KA5YDJ) while still serving in the US Navy, stationed in Alameda CA as an Aviation Meteorologist. After participating in amateur radio communications support related to the San Francisco earthquake of 1989, he ended up in the New Orleans area where he became a certified Navy Instructor, teaching in the Navy’s Reserve Meteorology and Oceanography School. It was during this time that he became an ARES member and assisted many emergency support organizations during hurricanes and other severe weather disasters in Louisiana. His efforts were recognized by the Navy when he was awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
Before retiring from the Navy as the Chief in Charge of the NAS New Orleans Weather Office, he had been appointed the ARES Southeast Louisiana District Emergency Coordinator, then the ARES State Emergency Coordinator and was privileged to be the guest speaker at one of the National Hurricane Conferences, representing ARES and Amateur Radio efforts after Hurricane Andrew.
After retiring from the Navy, Gordon went into Law Enforcement where he again became a Certified Instructor for the Law Enforcement Academy, receiving his instructing certification through the FBI. While not as active in amateur radio as before, he was still very active in disaster support.
After Hurricane Katrina, Gordon moved to Oregon and worked as a deputy for the Sheriff’s Office. He quickly became active in Amateur Radio again and was appointed as the ARES EC for the county. About a year later, after also working part-time in County Emergency Management Department he was appointed the County’s Director of Emergency Management and is now an Oregon Certified Emergency Manager heading the Tillamook County Emergency Management Department.
